The programme for the Junior Surf carnvial at Riversdale on Sunday 24th Janaury can be downloaded here. Please report to Helen at Riversdale by 9.15am ready for a 10am start.
Surf Life Saving Wellington (SLSW) holds competitions for junior surf competitors throughout the season.
it is not compulsory to compete in these carnvials but most children enjoy a day at the beach mixing with children from other clubs and testing their skills.
Competitors are divided into the following age divsions with age appropriate events for each:

7 - 9 years | Run-wade-run, boogie board, beach flags, beach sprint |
10 - 11 years | Run-swim-run, surf race, paddle board, diamond (swim/board), board relay,board rescue, tube rescue, beach flags, beach sprint, beach relay |
12 - 13 years | Run-swim-run, surf race, paddle board, diamond (swim/board), board relay,board rescue, tube rescue, beach flags, beach sprint, beach relay, Cameron relay |
Within each division individual races are held for each year and gender (e.g 7 year old girls, 8 year old girls, 9 year old girls etc ) and for combined age groups for team events (e.g. 10 & 11 year old board relay). Points are taken for individual races to determine the top three placings in each year group over the season.
Competition Equipment
All Lyall Bay competitors must wear a club beanie (which identifies you as a member of the Lyall Bay club). We encourage the children to also wear club rashvests and club togs.
The younger chidlren may wear wetsuits.
The club provides all boogie boards, paddle boards and other racing equipment.
Please bring to all competitions:
- sunscreen, water, food ( the host club usually has BBQ food to purchase), sunhat and club sweatshirts etc

Ocean Athletes - NZ U14 Championships
The Ocean Athletes are for 10 - 13 year old competitors from clubs all over NZ.
The championships are held at Mt Maunganui beach from 26 - 28 February 2009. Lyall Bay sends a team each year for what is regarded as one of the best surf competitons and a lot of fun for competitors (and parents). The team travels in rental vans or private car and most stay together at a lodge in Mt Maunganui.
If you are interested in competing at these championships please talk to the club coach, Walter Maxwell, about the training sessions you should be attending.
