Dear Surf Life Saving New Zealand member,

This week our Interim Chief Executive, Pat Waite, passes the baton
of leadership for our organisation. I take this opportunity,
on behalf of Surf Life Saving in New Zealand, to offer a sincere
thank you to Pat for the enormous contribution he has made to the
movement. Pat has made a lasting impact to the organisation
in the relatively short time he has been with us. With his
steady hand and wealth of experience he has lead the organisation
to new levels of professionalism and cohesiveness.

I know Pat has reached out and touched many within our Surf Life
Saving community. There have been many laughs and a lot of
new friendships. For me and the rest of the board, Pat has
offered reassuring guidance and a refreshingly positive perspective
on what we collectively achieve. To Pat and his wife Melva we
wish you all the best for a well-earned break as you settle into
your new home. You will always remain part of our Surf Life
Saving family.

Our support and sympathies extend to our neighbours, Surf Life
Saving Australia and the families and friends closest to the tragic
drowning at the recent Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in
Queensland. Those that have monitored progress in the
Australian press will acknowledge the huge impact the tragedy has
had on Surf Life Saving in Australia.

Our New Zealand clubbies did extremely well at the event; check out some of the achievements below. A
huge congratulation to Papamoa'swinning team in the photo above -
Jackson Edwards, Seth Merrett and Michael Bryant.

The State New Zealand Surf Life Saving and BP Surf Rescue New Zealand Championships mark an
end of the competitive season in New Zealand. SLSNZ is
constantly reviewing its own event safety procedures. With
the recent situation in Australia and winter months upon us we will
undertake another review to ensure sufficient measures are in place
to keep our member safe.

At this time I would also offer a warm welcome to incoming Chief
Executive - Paul Dalton. Paul will have the opportunity to
meet club representatives at the current round of regional Club
Chairs Committee meetings.

Paul joined members of the board, Pat and President Bob Harvey at
the recent Northern Club Chairs meeting. These meetings offer
an important communication link directly between clubs and the
governance of SLS in New Zealand as a means to monitor and guide
progress for our movement. We appreciated the discussion with
Northern and input from Club Chairs. These meetings will
rotate through Central, Southern and Eastern regions over the next
few weeks and I urge clubs to ensure representatives attend these
meetings.

Yours in surf

Michael Bassett-Foss
Chairman SLSNZ

A message from the Chief Executive

Greetings from your newest recruit..today is my first official day
in the office and I am sure will be the first of many busy
ones!

My primary objective for the first few weeks induction programme
is to meet as many people as possible, including a full round of
Regional Club Chair meetings! In fact I have already been to
the first of those, held in Auckland on 4 April, which was a great
way for me to meet people in person and get to hear what is going
on first-hand. I am looking forward to the rest of these, and
to meet all of the Surf Life Saving staff and our partners and
stakeholders.

With a Board meeting this weekend there won't be much easing into
things, but with Pat's able assistance and guidance I hope to be up
to speed as soon as possible!! As the drowning statistics
over the Easter weekend showed, there is no time to relax!

A message from Pat Waite

It is with a sense of satisfaction that I hand over to your new
Chief Executive Paul Dalton today. The satisfaction comes from
seeing SLSNZ quickly moving back to a stable position with an
effective management team, financial balance, structures and
business disciplines in place and a strong governance board. A lot
has been achieved in the past ten months and it is a credit to the
board, staff and members that we are able to look back with a
degree of satisfaction. Of course there is still a lot to do and
Paul brings to the role the right ingredients to lead SLSNZ into
its second century.

I have likened the Chief Executive to the 'conductor of an
orchestra' whose role is to ensure that every member of the
organisation has the training, the ability, the instruments and the
environment to play at their very best and to create that beautiful
music we love to hear when we go to a concert. We certainly know
when we hear a wrong note or a player out of tune or time!

Not coming from a surf background I have learned a lot in a short
space of time and can now appreciate the terms:

'In it for Life' - which I certainly see in the families
that make up the backbone of our clubs

'Between the Flags' - the members who week after week patrol
the beaches so that our communities can swim with some sense that
help is available should they get into difficulties

'Sand Between your Toes' - it was only when I attended the
national championships and Surf League that I really appreciated
why Surf Life Saving members are so passionate and I saw the surf
family together. Your dedication and passion for 'surf' and for
each other is one to be admired.

I feel privileged to have been associated with you all and will
watch and applaud as Surf Life Saving continues to build on its
position as the pre-eminent authority on water safety!

We are blessed with incredible supportive partners in State, BP
and DHL who stand with us not only as sponsors but supporters and
believers.

I am indebted to the amazing Surf Life Saving staff that have
supported me and taught me so much of what Surf Life Saving is all
about. The guidance and support given to me by our President Bob
Harvey and to our Chairman initially Graeme Cullen and now Michael
Bassett-Foss who have been at the end of the phone at any time and
to our board who bring to the table a range of skills and knowledge
and who are dedicated to building the national organisation we can
all be proud of!
The unstoppable team from East End Surf Life Saving club were
invincible once again with a team of over 30 competitors they won
overall top club by a whopping 56 point lead over Sumner Surf Life
Saving Club. They also took top premier crew (Andrew Cronin and
James Morwood).

St Clair sisters Carla and Steph Laughton capped a magical
six-month surf lifesaving season, dominating the womens
division.

The siblings were untouchable amid perfect conditions in the open
women's ranks, winning all four titles - the tube rescue, mass
rescue, assembly rescue and single rescue.

It also gave them the satisfaction of winning gold medals in all
three New Zealand championship carnivals, beginning in October with
the State NZ Pool Championships in Hamilton and including their
open women's canoe title at the State NZ Surf Life Saving
Championships in Gisborne in early March. Read more from the IRB

More than 100 New Zealand athletes competed at the annual
Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 28 March - 1st April in
Queensland.

There were some incredible achievements over there by clubbies
racing for their New Zealand clubs and some clubbies racing for
their Australian clubs.

Rising New Zealand sprinting star Kodi Harman has capped a dream
summer by winning the open men's beach sprint. Fresh from winning
the national under-20 100-200m track double - the former in a
blistering 10.56secs - the Papamoa 17-year-old upstaged
Australasia's fastest on the sand to cement a unique double, just
two weeks after winning the New Zealand open title.

He also helped the Papamoa under-19 beach relay team - featuring
Danny Kayes, Jordan Hills and Hamish Smith - to victory in their
final. The same combination also won the New Zealand open and
under-19 titles in Gisborne.

And in one of the national event's last races, the Papamoa
under-17 ski relay team - Jackson Edwards, Seth Merrett and Michael
Bryant (team shown in the banner) - capped a marvellous campaign
for the Bay of Plenty club by heading home teams from Burnie Burnie
and Noosa Heads.

Some standout individual medal performances were
from:

Maia Bryant, Papamoa - Silver, Under-15 Womens 2km Beach Run
Chester Edwards, Orewa - Silver, Open Mens 2km Beach Run
Laura Leeson, Orewa - Silver, Open Womens 2km Beach Run
Natalie Peat, Papamoa - Silver, Under-17 Womens Ski Race

Mogan Foster, Kurrawa - Bronze, Open Mens Flags
Devon Halligan, Manly - Gold, Under-19 Ski Race, Gold Under-19

Surf Lifeguards qualify for Olympics

Three more New Zealand surf lifeguards booked a place at the London
Olympics on the 27 March with a brilliant performance at the State
New Zealand Swimming Championships in Auckland.

Steven Kent (Titahi Bay), Dylan Dunlop-Barrett (NPOB) and St
Clair's Andrew McMillan smashed the New Zealand 4x200m freestyle
relay record and gave themselves an outstanding chance to earn an
invitation to London.

Along with Matamata's Matthew Stanley, the quartet went 7:14.05 in
the relay which was seven seconds under the old national record,
but more importantly posting a time that would have placed them
10th in the world last year. <a

Sport Highlights

Huge boost for NZ high performance squad
Australia-based ironwoman Devon Halligan has given New
Zealand Surf Life Saving selectors a massive boost by making
herself available for their world championship squad.

The 19-year-old Manly star, fresh from a brilliant campaign at the
Australian titles on the Gold Coast, is now in line to emulate her
father Daryl, who pulled on a black jersey in 20 tests for the
Kiwis during a stellar rugby and league career on both sides of the
Tasman.

The world championships - Rescue 2012 - will be held in Adelaide
in November and Halligan has given up a spot in the Australian high
performance squad to make herself available for New Zealand.

"It was just a personal decision - I've always classified myself
as a Kiwi, plus I really wanted to race opens at the worlds,"
Halligan said. "I know a lot of the Kiwi high performance
squad and get along with them really well, so this was a pretty
easy decision for me in the end." <a
