Surf Boats and Surf Canoes

Surf Boat Rowing

Before the days of the iconic orange Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs), lifeguards use to row wooden boats through the surf to rescue swimmers in trouble! While no longer used for rescue purposes today, rowing surf boats remains a popular part of surf life saving sport.

A Surf Boat crew consists of four rowers and a sweep who steers the boat. Lyall Bay SLSC has a number of men’s and women’s crews and is always looking for new rowers.

If you’re interested in trying surf boat rowing, get in touch.

Surf Canoes

From the old single hulled, rocky surf canoes, to the racing machines we see today, surf canoes have come a long way.

A Surf Canoe crew consists of four paddlers, and is similar to Waka Ama (or Outrigger Canoe), but with waves.

Men’s and women’s crews compete in U19 or Open age group races. If you’re interested in joining a Lyall Bay SLSC canoe crew then get in touch.
