Masters Surf Sport

Masters is all about fun and keeping clubbies active and involved in the club and surf lifesaving sport.

Masters events are often included as part of the local and regional competitions, with the pinnacle event of the season, Masters National Championships, being held the first day of the SLSNZ National Championships.

Lyall Bay has had great success at the Masters-level over many years now. Our team is often small, but is a powerful mix of ex-club competitors from the open and age groups level, as well as coaches and parents of our younger club members. At the Masters National Championships, the club often finishes in the top 5 clubs, and at the World Masters Games in 2017 (held in Auckland), Lyall Bay was the top club in the world!

Our numbers are steadily increasing, and we have an exciting period coming up for our Masters team. If you are interested, get in on the fun and please contact us.

Masters Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for Masters you need to be 30 years old, and either a currently or previously qualified lifeguard.

In 2021, the masters eligibility criteria was amended and masters competitors must now ensure they refresh their lifeguard qualification annually to be able to compete at Regional and National events. Local events (such as Whitehorse competitions) may give dispensations for this.

Masters are contested in 5-year age-bands (beginning from 30-34 years), or for team-events, based on the combined age of the team members. Your eligibility/age-group is decided by your age as at September 30.
